The fight against Sacramento overreach and statewide one-size-fits-all land use legislation continues…
Although SB 50 was killed in January, it is not resting in peace. SB 50 author State Senator Scott Weiner and his allies continue to take elements of the bill and push them forward in other pending bills.
The latest of these proposals is AB 725, authored by Assemblywoman Buffy Wicks, who evidently shares many of Wiener’s extremist views – including his dream of destroying single-family neighborhoods throughout the State.
AB 725 seeks to:
- Authorize and protect McMansions and single family compounds sprawling across more than one parcel
- Exclude ADUs from housing needs calculations so that cities/counties CANNOT count ADUs and Junior ADUs in meeting their RHNA assigned goals/numbers.
- Exclude commercial and transit corridors from housing calculations for up to 25% of the RHNA numbers so that cities/counties cannot count commercial or high density residential parcels in meeting their RHNA numbers.
- Eliminate local planning along commercial corridors by demanding lower density parcels be rezoned, and stymies planning for the influx of large, duplex sized ADUs.
AB 725 has passed through the Assembly and must be stopped in the State Senate.
